Try This: Care Personally, Challenge Directly

Radical Candor's core idea is simple: real leadership sits at the intersection of caring personally and challenging directly. Miss one, and you either become a pushover who absorbs everyone's energy, or a boss who's clear but cold. Neither builds a team that thrives.

This week, pick one recurring meeting or interaction where you've noticed yourself over-giving—more energy, more patience, more absorbing of complaints than the room is giving back.

Before the next one, write down two short answers:

  1. What does "caring personally" actually look like here? (Not entertaining. Not absorbing. What's the real version of care in this room?)

  2. What does "challenging directly" look like here? (What's the one clear expectation you haven't said out loud yet?)

Then say the second one, plainly, in the meeting. Not softened into a question. Not buried in enthusiasm. Just the expectation, stated once.

Notice what happens to your own energy afterward.
